HAVE YOU GIVEN UP ON YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION YET?
By Desiree Hendrickson
If you are one of the 80% struggling to keep your infamous New Year’s Resolutions, don’t worry. We are only a quarter of the way through 2018. It is totally okay to take some time to refresh those resolutions!
So let’s see how you can get in the right direction again and don’t give up! Rethink.
RECOGNIZE WHAT IS NOT WORKING
Let’s take a step back and evaluate how the first few months of this year have been for you. It helps to breakdown your daily routines and decide what you like and don’t like about them.
For example, I used to train at night. I would get up each morning, head into work to put in my 8-hour day and then drive to the gym and spend an hour there before heading home. That worked.. sort of. I missed eating evening meals with my husband, I missed out on some social events for cutting out early to get to the gym, and I missed out on sleep. Winding down after a 5:30pm workout caused me to toss and turn all night and wake up feeling like I had just went to bed. A solution had to be made and I knew I had to rethink my resolution.
PREPARE A SOLUTION
Training sessions in the evenings were not working for me. It was no question that my social lifestyle was suffering from my personal expectations and commitments to my training. My solution that I incorporate into my daily routine is waking up at 4:00am to get to the gym for a 5:00am workout. It may sound crazy to you “non-early risers” but I actually find myself more productive during the day at my job when I get my training done in during the morning. In addition to that, I’m not counting down the minutes until I can bust out of the office and head to the gym. So, waking up at 4:00am seems to be my ‘rethink’. I’m now able to participate in afternoon/evening activities without feeling guilty of not sticking with my commitment. I have dinner with my husband every night where we can catch up on each others day and enjoy one another’s company. Therefore, training in the early morning brings more value and happiness to my day. I would recommend breaking down each daily activity and recognize the value and impact it makes to your day.
Naturally, as human beings we are creatures of habit. It’s important for us to find what habits work and don’t’ work to keep us happy. When you recognize what you enjoy about each day, it’s easier to analyze where adjustments need to be made.
FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO START OVER VERSUS A TIME TO RETHINK
Starting fresh isn’t failing. Just because we’re a few months into 2018 doesn’t mean you have to wait another 300+ days until January 1st, 2019 to start again. If you’re waiting for the perfect time to start let me tell you the perfect time DOES NOT EXIST AND IT NEVER WILL. The longer you wait to get back on track, the longer you’re waiting to make progress.
IT IS OKAY TO RETHINK SLOWLY
If you find yourself needing to start over because your goal or commitment is too ambitious for the moment, make small adjustments and then work your way back up. Creating smaller milestone goals will lead you to achieving your ultimate goal.
For example, if your ultimate goal is to be down 30lbs by June 1st and you’re only 10lbs down now, that is still a 10lbs loss; so don’t be quick to write that off. You are already doing great! A ‘refresh’ may be to try to be down 5 more pounds by April 1st , and then aim for another 5lbs down by May 1st to get you a little bit closer to your ultimate goal by June. Creating smaller goals that can be foreseen helps our minds shift focus for a short period of time to something that seems more obtainable. Remember, weight loss isn’t a sprint.. it’s a marathon.
RETHINK YOUR MOTIVATION
Motivation can be easy to lose sight of when we’re working towards a goal for what seems like an eternity. Continuing to stay motivated towards your goal is important. I try to always remember my purpose. My purpose is to be an example for others. Anyone can obtain something extraordinary if we put in the effort and do our best each day.
When you understand your purpose or your WHY it becomes your motivation. Always remember WHY you started, HOW FAR you’ve come, and KEEP MOVING FORWARD. Someone once told me consistency is key and I’ll never forget it. Keep working hard, become comfortable with being uncomfortable, and stay patient with the results. Effort is a choice and it’s up to you to choose what happens next.
