I look at the WOD (Workout of the Day) and it is:
5 rounds of:
- 50 Kettlebell Swings
- 20 Wall Balls
The fear settles in a bit. I shake it aside and set my timer. Before thinking twice, I push the start button and hear, “ 3,2,1,Go!”
I grab the Kettlebell and start my swings. I make a plan in my head, “I will do two sets of 25 with a short rest in between the swings, and get on to the Wall balls.”
At about 12 swings in, the “hater voices” in my head start. They say, “This is so hard.” “You are too old.” “This is crazy!” “Maybe you should modify it down to only 3 rounds.”
SHAKEY BUT STRONG
I finish the first 25, take a few breaths and push the voices aside.
Finally, I get the first 50 swings in and then grab the weighted medicine ball and start my wall balls. They are tough but the 20 don’t seem so bad. Finally round 1 done, on to round 2. My body is really warmed up and more importantly my mind is ready for what each round entails. I get through round 2, and then after 3 I have the relief that I am over the hump.
The voices are gone during all of 4 and I feel energized. Round 5 was shaky but I still felt strong.
I beat the “hater voices” and feel proud and accomplished.
I start to think about how in life the “first round” is always the hardest. It is the unknown and because of that a little scary. It is when the doubt creeps in and when you are most likely to quit because you perceive it as “too hard.”
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUCCESS AND FAILURE
So many people start their fitness journey and don’t make it past a week or a month. They listen to the “hater voices” and never get to experience that feeling of strength and accomplishment from finishing that workout, training for that 5k, or making healthy food choices on a regular basis. This is the difference between success and failure.
Block out the negative thoughts/feelings/voices. Know that the beginning is the worst. You can get through it and it is so worth it. Believe in yourself and your strength!
Just push the timer and get through that first round.
