The number of apps out there providing you with unlimited health and fitness options is incredible. You have your pick of workouts, nutrition, weight loss, meditation and everything in between, even an app to help you sleep better. And, in 2020 you will see even more. The apps are only getting smarter, easier to use, and cheaper so no matter if you are traveling or do not want to leave your home you have many choices literally at your fingertips.

Yes, rowing is officially a trend. The machine sitting in the corner collecting dust has finally come out as one of the biggest fitness trends of the year. The popularity of this new-fashioned machine comes with good reason. It is incredibly easy on the joints and builds strength in both your upper and lower body at the same time. Rowing not only does all that but it also can help your posture!

These latest fitness trends are the coolest things I have ever seen. The first one is called Tonal. Whether you are looking to build strength or get lean, this at-home-gym takes the guesswork out of your workout. Your “Coach” guides you as it learns and adapts to fit your body’s needs.

The second super techy fitness trend is called the Mirror. “From cardio and strength to yoga and boxing, we have the perfect workout for everyone in your household. Enjoy 70+ new live classes weekly, or take a class anytime with our extensive library of on-demand workouts. Tens of thousands of classes means your workouts always stay fresh.” Brynn Putnam is the founder and CEO and has found a way to turn less than two feet of wall space into a personal fitness studio. So cool!!

Using correct form has always been extremely important and 2020 will bring even more focus on perfecting that. Fitness Trainers will continue to fine-tune their client’s mobility. They will focus on building a good foundation with safe progression. By doing this their clients will become more active with less risk of injury. Good form is the difference between ending a workout feeling refreshed or ending your workout in pain.

Gone is the thought process of working out just to lose weight or doing it even though you hate it… Welcome the mindset to work out because it just feels so damn good. If you happen to lose weight because of it? Hey, that’s awesome if that is your desire. But, isn’t your workout way more fun when you aren’t worried about numbers on a scale or looking like that famous celebrity?

As much as we use our phones, laptops, and smart TVs in our workouts the biggest fitness trend is to actually do the exact opposite. Unplug. Technology has infiltrated everything we do today and to let our bodies and minds take a break from Like’s, notifications and posts are more important than ever. You are going to see more gyms and clubs take this approach in 2020, if not for just a couple hours or classes at a time.

Health and fitness trends are forever evolving from naked exercising to the infamous shake weight. Nevertheless, what works for some may not work for others (except the shake weight, I don’t know anyone that worked for). The important thing is that we support one another and continue to be better mentally and physically each and every day.

Jessica Allion

I reached 200 pounds after having my children and several things have led me to be healthier for myself and for my family; countless fitness DVDs, a gym membership, leading a weight management class at my church, and a personal trainer telling me I had good symmetry.
My husband and I have competed in several competitions from 2012 to 2015. Every competition brought more information on how to be better and stronger both mentally and physically.
I have learned many things on my fitness journey, but the one thing that I hear over and over no matter what size they are is the self-talk that many women tell themselves regarding the way they see themselves. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have the tools and wisdom of the people around me to help women of all shapes and dynamics to help them on their journey.
