Simple Innovative Meal Planning – Love Eating
By Kathy Lange
This week I am doing something different. I know that coffee is technically not a food but, I love it and it seems a lot of people feel the same way.
Coffee is actually pretty good for you and recent studies have shown that fellow drinkers are less likely to have certain illnesses such as diabetes and liver cancer. It can also be a great pre-workout beverage especially if you are not a fan of traditional pre-workouts.
IT’S NOT JUST CAFFEINE
If you think this little mug of jolt is just caffeine – you are missing out. Coffee is a good source of several minerals including choline (enhanced athletic performance), folate (think folic acid), magnesium, and potassium. So how could you go wrong enjoying a cup of brain juice? Well, by adding a whole lot of fat and sugar. That kind of cancels out all the good you were trying to do. Those coffeehouse coffees can be the equivalent of a decadent dessert once you add milk and flavoring and maybe even syrup and chocolate shavings. They are so delicious but when I talk about coffee having health benefits, this is not the kind of coffee beverage I am referring too.
YOU HAVE OPTIONS FOR JOE
How can you enjoy the amazing delicious brewed flavor and reap the rewards of its many health benefits without just drinking plain black java? It’s not as hard as you think and you don’t need to have fancy machine in order to do it. You have a couple options.
I am going to focus on the iced version because in summer it really makes a great afternoon pick me up. Brew a pot of coffee and let it cool (or just brew extra in the morning). My favorite iced cafe drink is very simple. Pour cold coffee over ice, add liquid stevia and extract flavoring of your choice, the caramel is just delicious!
All the glorious flavors
Extracts come in an incredible variety of flavors. If you are a person that prefers milk in your coffee choose a low fat option. Are you a Frappuccino lover? Brew your mud a little stronger than usual than drop the ingredients listed above in to a blender that can handle ice and give the ingredients a spin until the ice is crushed. Give it a coffeehouse feel by sprinkling a little nutmeg on top.
Short on time, not options.
You have several options and the great news is that they all involve the added benefit of protein. You can get powdered coffee protein products that can be mixed with water, milk or coffee for an extra caffeine boost.
JavaPro (or try NutraBio’s Java Whey) is my favorite for the best coffeehouse flavor. You can prepare this just like the iced version then I mix it with water or leftover coffee and put it in the blender with ice for at home Frappuccino. My favorite summer time coffee treat uses JavaPro and almond or coconut milk. I combine them in a shaker cup and then pour into popsicle molds. This makes a guilt free treat for hot summer days.
