GREAT SUPERBOWL FIXINS’

Fall is here and that means leaves changing into their beautiful fall colors, pumpkin everything, brisk mornings

and

FOOTBALL.

Game day usually brings those penalty-popping appetizers that quickly leave your diet goals feeling sacked.

We want to help you intercept those food fumbles so you don’t sacrifice the Top Ten Plays of the Game!

Here are some great recipes to bring to your party!

STUFFED PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS

(GLUTEN-FREE)

INGREDIENTS

4 1 oz portobello mushrooms

8 oz lean ground turkey

2 oz fresh mozzarella cheese

4 TBS onion, minced

1 tsp dried Italian seasoning

¼ tsp sea salt

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove stems and discard. Remove gills from underside of mushroom using a small spoon and discard. Lightly spray a baking dish with cooking oil and place mushroom underside up.

Spray a small skillet with cooking spray. Heat pan on medium heat. Add turkey, onion, garlic powder, Italian seasoning and salt. Using a spoon break up the meat into a small crumble while cooking. Cook until turkey is cooked through, about 3 minutes. Spoon equal amounts of meat mixture into mushrooms carefully pressing down.

Top with ½ oz of cheese on each mushroom and bake for about 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

EASY GAME DAY HELPFUL HINTS

  • Do not stand by the table of food. After you fill your plate, sit by someone not within arms reach of the feast.  Added bonus to sit next to the person who will keep you talking.  You will be forced to eat slow and fill up faster. More talky, less (mindless) eat-ey.
  • Alcoholic drinks can really pack on calories. If you are into the harder stuff stick to lighter colored spirits. They have less calories. Stick to the “one drink an hour” rule and you shouldn’t get too far off track in more ways than one! Want a fun cardio idea (yes, you do)? Every time your team makes a great play jump up and cheer!
  • If you want to try everything…go ahead (wait…what?)! But only put a small bite on your plate of each tempting dish that is calling out to you. You can always go for the extra point dish that you especially liked.

ONE LAST THING

Remember that you are there for the good company and all the delicious choices. Since the beginning of time food has been a big part of a good celebration with friends and family. It always comes down to moderation, and once you learn how to do that, that is when you can really enjoy everything else.
