During my senior year, I tore my ACL just before the start of the basketball season. I was a three-sport athlete in high school, sports were always in my top priorities growing up. I was devastated when I heard the results of my MRI from my doctor. Basketball is my favorite sport and couldn’t imagine life without playing it, let alone having the ability to do anything the same way stripped from me so quickly. From there, I would do anything to help heal and recover from this injury.
In May, after high school graduation, I decided to try to be a walk-on as a basketball player at UW-Platteville. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play with the team but learned that over the course of my freshman year that playing at the college level was not for me. Going into my sophomore year I started to become more aware of eating healthy foods and working out regularly. I began using my boyfriend’s P90X videos 6 days a week. Adding a 2-3 mile runs a few times a week as well. I felt good but was just going through the motions. So I joined a local gym and started a weight-training program. From there, I did hours of looking over plans online and learning more about nutrition advice.
One night I was writing out my goals: short-term, long-term, personal, professional, etc. I wanted to do something that would challenge myself not only physically but mentally as well.. and that’s when I decided I wanted to compete in my first bodybuilding show.

Desiree’s Advice for Women Beginners
Don’t be intimidated by the gym. Start small and keep it basic, then branch from there. Starting with the basics will provide a sound foundation to build your knowledge and experience. Knowledge is power and confidence is key, always remember that.
- Do not ever limit yourself. We are capable of so much more than what we believe.
- Do not be embarrassed to be the “beginner” in the gym. We all start our journey somewhere.
Desiree loves to use Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy to give self a boost of energy. The Amino Energy Café series as an excellent substitute for creamer in my coffee. I have used flavors such as Watermelon or Blueberry mixed in lemonade or iced tea. They blend so easily!
My all-time favorite protein and what is always stocked in my pantry is the Fudge Brownie flavor of Dymatize ISO-100. I’ve tried all the flavors, cinnamon bun, cookies & crème, etc. and they’re all delicious!
As for a post-workout drink, I tend to jump around and use different products. However, I have two favorites: Xtend and ABC CORE Nutritionals. Xtend brand blends very well and is a very fine kind of powder. I’ve loved all the flavors! ABC CORE Nutritionals is an extensive blend with multiple aminos that will assist in more efficient recovery. My favorite flavor is Blueberry!
Early to rise…
My husband and I are up at 4 am and heading out the door to get to the gym by 5 am (we live about 20-25 minutes away from the gym). When I get up I already have all my bags (shower bag, gym bag, lunch bag, and purse) downstairs by our garage entrance to put in my car when I’m heading out the door. When I get out of bed, I change my clothes and make my pre-workout meal, quick oats, and eggs. I wash that down with my pre-workout drink while I check my emails.
The rest of my day…
After I’m finished training I shower and get ready for work at my local gym. From there I head over to work for the day. When I get there I make a post-workout meal. Usually, this is quick oats, a cut up banana, and protein powder all mixed together. Throughout the day at work, I eat lunch around noon or 1 and then a snack later in the afternoon around 4 pm. Typically, I’m finished with the workday by 5:30 pm and it’s time to head home. Our home is about 20 minutes away from my office so I’m usually home by 6:00 pm.
Because my husband and I do not have children (yet) we look forward to having some downtime together. It depends on his day at work what time he is able to make it home, usually, he’s home by 6:00 or 6:30 pm. I’ll wait for him to shower before preparing dinner. Because we do all our meal prep on Sunday we’re usually just reheating up meals throughout the week that we’ve already prepped. I enjoy this because it allows us to focus on each other more with the short amount of time we have together on weeknights.
After dinner, we start to prepare for the next day. We’ll both pack our lunches/snacks and I’ll pack my purse and shower bag. When that is all done it’s usually around 8:30 pm or 9:00 pm and we head for bed.
Our routine may seem boring and predictable but it works for us. We keep each other accountable and help each other in any way possible to make the next day easier. I’m not kidding when I say my husband is hands down my biggest supporter.
I enjoy working legs. My favorite compound movement is any variation of the squat.
Also, I really enjoy incorporating bands to exhaust the muscle! Do not underestimate the effectiveness and intensity of bands.
Favorite “Thing” In The Gym
The turf! It’s a neat carpet layout that is fun to do conditioning exercises on! Along with the garage doors, open doors while working out is the best and most “free” feeling you can have during your workout!
Favorite Fitness Accessory
Wireless Headphones. Although, I recently joined a new gym and they play upbeat music more of my style so I don’t need to “tune” out everyone in the gym. But whenever I train anywhere else my wireless headphones are a MUST!
Favorite Song On Your Music List
- Strip That Down by Liam Payne
- Humble by Kendrick Lamar
- Harder To Breathe by Maroon 5
- Get It Girl by Ying Yang Twins
- Dark Horse by Katy Perry
- Make Me Proud by Drake
- She Knows by Ne-Yo
- And of course, this list is always growing.
Lowest/Highest Point In Your Journey
Lowest: Experiencing the weight gain after my first bodybuilding show
Highest: Right now. I feel that I am in my strongest, fastest, and best shape I’ve been as an overall athlete.
What My Future Holds
I don’t see myself competing in too many more bodybuilding shows in my future. Preparing for competitions like those require days, weeks, months, of hard work and disciple in the gym and out of the gym. This sport can be flexible in nature, but at some point, it always becomes selfish in time spent during preparation especially closer to competition day.
What I enjoy most about this sport is the personal development I’ve experienced. Over the past 3 years, I’ve learned more about myself than I did in the previous 20 years… And I couldn’t be any more happy with where I am mentally and physically. It’s truly amazing to watch yourself work through challenges such as bodybuilding and then experience a more positive outlook and mindset on life. I will never take for granted what the health and fitness industry has helped create for me find my “happy”.
