Essentially Stopping the Night Terrors – Mary’s Blog

My kids have never really slept through the night. Somehow they always end up in our bed by morning. It’s gotten to the point that I don’t even notice when they come in…well, except for my 6 year old. He comes in like a wrecking ball…Here’s my story on how we defeated Night terrors with essential oils.

It was a couple years ago that we found our son, Jackson in the garage. We heard the door slam and then heard him yelling and pointing; he was about four years old at the time.  As scary as it was for us, he had no recollection of it in the morning. Thankfully we haven’t found him in the garage since, but the nighttime battle was just beginning for our little family.

The worst one we have witnessed was when we were away for a weekend. He was delusional, inconsolable, yelling and crying on and off for three hours. It was like nothing I had experienced before. I knew it was more than a nightmare. So I researched and found similar symptoms (on Mayo Clinic’s site):

    • Sit up in bed
    • Scream or shout
    • Kick and thrash
    • Sweat, breathe heavily and have a racing pulse
    • Be hard to awaken, but if awakened be confused
    • Be inconsolable
    • Stare wide-eyed
    • Get out of bed and run around the house
    • Engage in aggressive behavior


This is what was happening exactly! It was obvious then that our son was not having nightmares, but rather night terrors! They became routine and predictable. Basically, two and a half hours after he fell asleep he would running crying and screaming into our room. They became more frequent…usually three times a week. I knew we needed to do something besides wait for him to outgrow them. So, I researched remedies.

    • Get more sleep. He gets 10-11 hrs a night – minus the terrors
    • Have less stress. He doesn’t lead a stressful life, that I know of!
    • Create a calming environment…


This is when I decided to get a diffuser and some essential oils and give it a try. For the last two months, we have been defusing NOW’s lavender and eucalyptus essential oils in his bedroom at bedtime and throughout the night. Sometimes I change it up and diffuse NOW Peaceful Sleep blend. We also rub the lavender essential oil on his feet. Since we started creating this calming environment, it has virtually made the night terrors go away! Jackson has had two night terrors in the last two months. It’s a simple way to deal with this until he outgrows them.

Essential oils are truly a blessing to so many people with different conditions. This is really the first experience I have had with them…and it has made me a believer and a user!  I even started diffusing them in our room nightly. They have essentially stopped the night terrors in our house and are helping all of us to get more sleep too!

Other Common Oils useful for common ailments:

Headaches = Eucalyptus or Peppermint Oil

Stress = Lavender

Anxiety = Frankensince Oil

PMS = Lavender or Eucalyptus Oil

Dandruff or Itchy Scalp = Tea Tree Oil
