All the protein
Choosing a protein powder can be a bit overwhelming with all the options out there: isolate, whey, casein, blends…the list goes on! While they all have their place, it’s important to do a little research because different types of protein are more beneficial to take at certain times (between meals, post workout, before bed, etc.) and being able to match the right protein to the right times will help ensure better results.
One of my favorite types of protein powders is Casein. Casein is a staple in my diet year round, and I find it to be most beneficial to take when I’m going to be without food for an extended period of time.
What is this …casein
Casein, like whey, comes from milk. During digestion casein gels when it hits stomach acid, reducing the rate of digestion. This allows for a slower release and utilization of casein’s amino acids. This basically means that your muscles receive a steady stream of protein, keeping you feeling full for a longer period of time. For this reason Casein is a great option to take in between meals, before bed, or if you know you’re going to be without food.
A great choice
A great Casein protein powder option is Dymatize’s Elite Casein. This is great choice for anyone looking to increase their protein intake, and as I stated before it’s the perfect protein to help keep you feeling fuller longer. Casein’s thick consistency is great for making pudding, thick shakes, dense mug cakes, and “ice-cream”, and it comes in a variety of flavors sure to curb any sweet-tooth cravings.
Pudding: Simply mix 1 scoop of Dymatize Casein in Smooth Vanilla with water. Stir in any toppings (I like fresh berries and a little honey) if desired and enjoy!
Mint Chocolate Shake: Blend 1 scoop Dymatize Casein in Rich Chocolate, ice, water or unsweetened almond milk, 1 tsp peppermint extract, stevia drops, and 1 tbs unsweetened cocoa powder. *For an extra decadent treat also add in 1/4 c of Arctic Zero Mint Chocolate Ice cream & top with Sugar Free Whipped Cream and a drizzle of Walden Farms Chocolate Syrup.
