FUNCTIONAL WEIGHT LOSS

As a personal trainer and track coach to many types of clients, my job is to create a fitness program that helps athletes and actors successfully perform their jobs and look aesthetically pleasing.

While your profession may not involve scoring goals, dunking baskets or hitting a ball you need to train for life as well as your health.

A lot of times your fitness goals include weight loss, and to achieve that you want to maximize both your time and results.

 

WHAT ARE FUNCTIONAL WORKOUTS

Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks.  Functional exercises simulate common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports . Using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time,functional  exercises also emphasize core stability. WHY ARE FUNCTIONAL AND CROSSFIT WORKOUTS GOOD FOR WEIGHT LOSS

According to the American Council on Exercise, 

“Training to improve functional strength involves more than simply increasing the force-producing capability of a muscle or group of muscles. Rather, it requires training to enhance the coordinated working relationship between the nervous and muscular systems.”

While functional training can involve many different modalities including the use of body weights, dumbbells or resistance equipment, it is different than a traditional weight lifting program.

Functional (also Crossfit) workouts are great for weight loss because they are intense and require multiple joints and muscle groups to be more effective.

Functional exercises are also beneficial because you can get in and out of the gym in under an hour.   If done correctly you can blast through calories and if you are a healthy nutrition program and taking the proper supplementation you can really shed the pounds!

HIGHER INTENSITY HIGHER CALORIE BURN

When constantly varied high intensity workouts are performed you torch calories much faster than steady state exercises or isolation movements. This is because there are multiple groups of muscles engaged simultaneously forcing you to use higher energy outputs to burn through those calories and shed the pounds.

BURN EVEN MORE CALORIES DURING A FUNCTIONAL WORKOUT?

Torch even more calories by using heavier weights that are challenging for you but make sure you don’t ever sacrifice form for heavier weight. Lift safe and don’t do the same workout repeatedly. Try to mix up combinations of workouts and exercises for the best results.

Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try a functional or crossfit workout today! You just might love it!

Cardio or isolation exercises can always have a place in your workout.  However, with the limited amount of time that many of us can dedicate to training we need to be training functionally, especially if you’re goal is weight loss.

You will see the results that you are looking for much faster.
