For those of us who love coffee, it can be frustrating – or just downright sad – when we hear our friends tell us that coffee isn’t good for us. Now if you’re someone who loads your Cup o’ Joe with sugar, cream, and lots of flavoring, then there’s some truth to that statement. But if you drink black coffee, or even just add a bit of cream, milk, or natural sweetener, it’s perfectly fine in moderation.

Here are five healthy & delicious coffee recipes that taste great and can get you energized for the day.


Put some PEP in your step – literally

Mixing Cayenne Pepper into your coffee recipe is a sure-fire way to add some much-needed fuel to push you through your morning workout. Don’t forget to add cinnamon and turmeric as well to round out the flavor profile of your morning joe. I prefer this recipe on ice but feel free to have it whichever way you like it.

  • 12 Ounces of freshly brewed coffee
  • Dash of cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cacao powder


The O-Ghee Morning Booster

Ghee, clarified butter from India, has immense benefits. Although traditionally used in Middle Eastern cuisines, this butter has become a back-pocket staple of sorts for western health enthusiasts. Use this super food in your workout to boost energy levels to push you past the finish line.

  • 1 Tablespoon of ghee
  • 16oz of freshly brewed coffee
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cacao powder


Shake It Up

Now, this next one is a recipe I received recently from a trainer-friend of mine at one of my Barry’s Bootcamp classes. Usually, I take my pre-workout shake and coffee separately. But mixing the two together not only saved me much needed time but combined two of my favorite things, Protein and Caffeine.

  • ½ of ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup of peanut butter
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (try for sugar-free!)
  • ½ cup sugar-free and unsweetened almond milk
  • ½ cup cold or room temperature brewed coffee
  • 1½ cups cubed ice



My Big Fat Greek Workout

Greek Yogurt has become a modern refrigerator staple for families, yuppies, suburbanites, and older people alike. Its high protein content makes it a perfect ingredient for pre-work out smoothies and adding some coffee to it will surely give you a huge boost of energy to push you through the last mile of your run.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 scoop vanilla whey protein
  • 2 tbsp instant coffee (check out some of the best instant coffee brands here)


AM MCT for your workout

MCT oil is among the favorite oils of health enthusiasts everywhere, and for good reasons. MCT oil is a fat burning machine and is known to promote gut health. So, head over to the gym and drink this MCT infused coffee recipe – it’ll be sure to help you get that beach bod of your dreams. Oh, and did we mention that it was tasteless?!

  • 2 tablespoon vanilla protein powder
  • 16oz freshly brewed coffee
  • 2 tsp MCT oil
