From embracing alternative milk products to utilizing versatile vegetables, 2018 held a number of fitness trends. It’s more rare now to go to a coffee shop that doesn’t have almond or soy milk options. People are open to trying their favorite dishes, think spaghetti or pizza, with a healthy twist by using vegetables in place of the starchy carbs. At home group classes became more popular too. In fact, I love using Neo U which offers live fitness classes anywhere.

This past years’ trends begs the question: What will 2019 bring?

Embrace You

One thing that we have seen skimming the surface and that will gain popularity in the new year is body positivity. Many of us tend to view exercise and dieting as a punishment for our body. It leads us to hate our bodies how they are.

This year however, it’s going to be all about loving your body, working out and eating right to feel good and treat your body well. It’s not to be viewed as punishment, but as improvement. We will see more of the big brands using real women of all shapes and sizes in their advertisements and use less airbrushing and editing.

We saw this past year, Victoria’s Secret annual fashion show had their lowest ratings ever as fewer people tuned in to watch something that made them feel bad about themselves. A few people claimed the show was “boring” but is it that it’s dull or that it gives us unrealistic expectations to be taller, skinnier, and sexier?

It’s no surprise that eating right and exercise is highly recommended, but all shapes and sizes should be accepted. Everyone isn’t the same and some us have health issues that can lead to weight gain or loss. Society tends to make people believe that we should all be the same size and shape, but we should see short, tall, skinny, fat, big boobs, small boobs, and more variety in 2019. Bring it on!

Relax Your Mind

Another trend we should see more of in 2019 is a focus on mental health. All around health includes more than the physical exertion and vegetables. You need to pay attention to mental health, emotional, and spiritual health to be truly healthy.

This year had brought on a lot of stress for me and it led me down a dark path. I began going days without speaking to anyone, sitting by myself, crying constantly feeling alone, empty, and sad all the time. I had thoughts that I can’t even tell you because I’m embarrassed. That’s what society has done. They have made us feel ashamed of having these feelings and going through things such as this. Finally, my husband reached out and he admitted that he didn’t know how to help me. He kindly asked if I would consider speaking with someone. I found a wonderful therapist who meets with me virtually every couple of weeks. She’s perfect for me because she is kind, brash, and funny. Her ability to meet virtually (like Skype) is great for my busy schedule. Each time I meet with her I feel so much better and as a whole I have truly improved. She gives me an outlet to vent and helps me to find ways to cope and improve and pan out with whatever I am dealing with.

The point is, if your mental health is suffering, eventually everything else will. My eating habits and workout habits suffered tremendously through my low points. You shouldn’t feel ashamed of needing and asking for help. You should feel proud that you can admit it and do something about it to improve yourself. That is truly healthy.

Faith is a southern girl, born and raised in North Carolina. She enjoys spending time with her husband and fur-baby.

Faith is living a healthy lifestyle and her ultimate passion is to inspire others to do the same.

She decided to change the way she was living 4 years ago, but she wasn’t expecting to actually fall in love with it!

Now she enjoys experimenting with different kinds of fitness and challenging her body to new heights whether it be pilates, plyometric training, or weight training, and she aims to inspire others to realize the strength within themselves as well.

Faith’s favorite product for pre-workout is the Optimum Nutrition Essential Amino Energy line. Her favorite flavor so far has been the peach lemonade, but next on her list is Mocha Cappuccino, yum! The use of natural caffeine sources is a real win for this product and it mixes easily, so there is no grainy texture.

For protein sources, she enjoys Oh Yeah! One Bars for a quick and filling snack on-the-go, of which she has many favorite flavors!  Or Gaspari Precision Protein to mix up a shake. Faith’s favorite recipe uses 1 scoop of the Cinnamon Cereal Crunch flavor, mixed with 1/2 a banana, 1/4 a cup of vanilla Greek yogurt, 1 tsp cinnamon, 8 ounces of unsweetened almond milk, and 1 cup of ice.
